GOBHAI
HOUSE

Art & Architecture Residency Camp

One of the last remaining bungalows designed by the legendary architect Charles Correa—built for his close friend, world-famous artist Mehli Gobhai.

Art Camp Architecture Heritage Residency

A weathered building is surrounded by trees and overgrown plants. Piles of fallen leaves and branches cover the earth in the foreground.

A white building with a rectangular facade stands under a clear sky. A doorway leads inside, and palm trees rise behind the structure.

A view through trees shows an entrance to a courtyard with concrete walls. A building stands in the distance behind palm trees and shrubs.

An interior view of a spacious studio features a high ceiling and track lighting. A wooden desk sits on the right, a chair is positioned in the centre, and large rectangular panels or canvases lean against the back wall.

A concrete structure with a wooden door is partially hidden by thick foliage and tree trunks. The roof of the building appears to be open or under repair.

A workshop or office space contains several wooden desks, chairs, and drafting tables. Large windows with metal bars allow natural light to enter the room, and various art supplies or architectural tools are scattered on the surfaces.

An exterior view shows a multi-storey concrete building with visible signs of weathering and dampness. Dense vegetation and trees surround the structure, with piles of cut branches laying on the ground in the foreground.

A lounge area contains a wooden sofa with fabric cushions and a low glass coffee table. A wooden armchair is placed in the corner near a doorway, and the floor is made of polished dark stone tiles.

A stone bench and a small table sit beneath the canopy of several trees. The ground is covered in dried leaves and shadows.

An indoor studio space features white walls and track lighting on the ceiling. Long wooden tables and drafting boards are arranged around the room, with several chairs and large boards leaning against the walls.

The Project

Background

A house with a story worth preserving

Gobhai House stands as a rare surviving example of Charles Correa's residential architecture—a thoughtful, climate-responsive design conceived for his longtime friend Mehli Gobhai, one of India's most celebrated abstract artists.

Our aim is to activate this space through a series of art and architecture camps, inviting practitioners, students, and enthusiasts to engage with its history, its spaces, and its spirit.
